Barbora Krejcikova is the 2021 French Open Women's Singles Champion!
By - rafaknight
That was the most subdued reaction I have seen for a person winning their first grand slam singles event .
i don't think it's quite dawned on her yet
Yup. Seems like she is still digesting it or thinking “I have to do this again tomorrow “
sometimes when you have had to work through managing your expectations, you get used to controlling your emotions a lot so then when the positive things do happen it doesn't hit you
I mean, she is playing in another slam final tomorrow lol
“Great now I have to play Novak”
The flood gates will open in the presser or in the trophy ceremony.
She's holding a lot in.
I genuinely hope she doesn't crash before tomorrow's women's doubles final
I haven’t seen a replay but I’m wondering if it was a subdued reaction because the ball was potentially in? I feel like most of us watching thought it looked in. It’s odd that umpire didn’t check it, and the reaction was so nonchalant maybe there’s some smoke to the fire. I really hope it was out just so there isn’t a controversy
Looking at replay, the ball was inside the line
Couldn't quite tell from the angle but it defo warranted the ump to come and check the mark
Here’s a tweet of match point, it looks in. Which if true is a huge fucking bummer.
They showed in Eurosport studio the last ball and it was 1-2cm out.
and that's why Nouni didn't even bother to check. He is an experienced umpire and he saw it was out enough to call the match. Krejcikova also instantly realized it was out in the slow-mo replay of her looking at the mark for the 1st time. Her reaction at that instant (first 2 seconds) shows that she had zero doubt the ball was out.
Since the margin of error is smaller than that, doesn’t that all but prove that it was out?
> Which if true is a huge fucking bummer.
RG: We don't use electronic line calling because balls leave mark on clay.
Umpire: Sometimes, I don't check the ball mark on match point that appears a close call on TV.
I mean, the ump doesn't check the mark unless someone asks, most of the time. And they certainly aren't watching the match on TV. Weird comment.
Read this person's response: https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/ny8ui8/barbora_krejcikova_is_the_2021_french_open_womens/h1kgz64/
I thought so too, so I rewound the broadcast and it seems in but the clay gets scattered way out, its just the angle
likely the angle. those judges are way closer than any TV broadcast...
She pointed the mark and by her reaction in slow-mo when she saw the mark, she instantly realized it was out. It's the umpire's job/fault if it was a wrong call + Pavlyuchenkova should have demanded fiercely for him to check the mark and she didn't, she wanted but she also quickly moved on. It's like in hawk-eye challenges. If players don't take their chances to challenge/make a big fuss about it, it's on them if they lose a point when the ball was in. Pavs accepted and Barbora pointed the mark to be checked if the umpire wanted. I saw no wrongdoings here.
Well you owe her a big fucking apology.
I dunno if it was out or in, and rewatching a broadcast won't make me 100 percent sure, but you'd think the umpire would check it...seems he didn't have the balls to make such a championship decision and just let it stand.
Yeah i don't think she expected to make it so far but she's ice cold
Plus she has a women's doubles finals tomorrow! So she's probably not in a partay mood til she wins that and sets a record
She has the opportunity to be the first woman to sweep the singles *and* doubles in Paris since Mary Pearce in 2000!
It's just the way we Czechs show our emotions :)
She knew it was in lol.
All through the post match it seemed like the gravity of the win was hitting her in waves.
That was the most anti climactic ending lmao
Fitting given the drama in her semi final!
I thought for sure pavs would ask for the ball mark checked lol
She clearly calls challenge [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jpoI-vvGmw&ab\_channel=StanSportAustralia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jpoI-vvGmw&ab_channel=StanSportAustralia)
Oh shit I didn't notice. Then why didn't the umpire come?
Feel sorry for Pavs
Yeah, that hamstring injury *really* impacted her ability to perform.
Of course, she tried her best, and played very good as well. It’s just that one unfortunate thing that ultimately leaves a large impact.
Hopefully she can bounce back from it, and that this is only the start of a new peak for her career...
Depth of Czech female tennis players - Kvitova, Pliskova, Muchova, Vondrousova - and the unlikely winner today is Krejcikova.
What an extremely awkward ending lol
hmmm yeah it's out. ok im the champ. not bad
Rather I saw the ball being in. But what to do. Oooops better to start celebrating.
You can tell it’s been 39 years since a Czech women won seeing how they botched up the anthem
Barbora fangirling when Henin was mentioned lol.
She was interviewed by J.Hénin and M.Pierce in studio after the SF and they joked that she almost fainted when she met Hénin not knowing she'd be here lol.
Love Anastasia! That's a lovely speech. Heartfelt story about his brother. And funny too with that anecdote about her friends. Lovely Pav!
barbs speeches are pretty good. she seems like that math grad student in college that TAs your class but is also not awkward about running into you at the bar and saying what's up
Judging by her reaction I think someone needs to tell her that 😂
she's the tim duncan of tennis
What a way to honour the late great Jana Novotna!
I guess as a narrative, this is a good win. Loses her coach who was a legendary player and a GS champ and then goes through hard stuff and out of nowhere in singles wins a GS.
I can clearly see the movie, especially considering the last ball and semi ball to be main points of it.
Is Barbora Krejcikova the only active player to have won a Grand Slam in all three disciplines: Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles? (aside from Williams sisters of course)
That's pretty iconic. Congrats!
Stosur? I don't know if Sam won dubs
Just checked Sam has all 3
OMG STOSUR YES shame on me!
I found out yesterday that she played for my local tennis club in the first womens team. The team won the german championchips 3 times in a row from 2016-2018
Oh wow she's showing some really true emotions now in front of the world
Congrats to Krejcikova; the match ended like a firework that didn't go off. Didn't feel like a GS final!
Was that last ball way in, or am I blind?
I saw in... weird that nobody even said anything on the broadcast, it looked very close.
Seemed in to me. No replay is suspicious
No idea why the chair ump didnt check.
I thought Pav was asking him to, but then he never did, so maybe it was just the camera angle on tv and in person it looked more obvious?
That’s the only reason, but even so I think it was close enough to give everyone some clarity!
So great to see Pavs up there. All these years of great tennis but not achieving the success, she has finally broken her QF obstacle. Hopefully, this will inspire her to play even better.
Pavs is like, can I just get the hell outta here already?
Krejcikova has shot variety. Pity Pavlyuchenkova seems to be hampered by her left thigh she has no way to counter Krejcikova's shot variety with limited movement.
Kudos to Krejcikova winning the major with her own craftiness, making strong players doubt their own power shots.
Congrats to her. She kept her poise and overcame two very tough opponents in 3 setters
Thrilled for Barbora and sad for Pavs. Well done both.
I loved her style throughout the competition, will be keeping an eye on her doubles final tmw
Not just a doubles player
I'm just happy it's ova.
Kova beats Kova
Fairy tale story for Krejcikova
After Junior French open and this match, Czech women still have the female double final to win lol.
i know people would have hated on her for it but pav should have made a fuss to check the line to at least make sure it was out
it's unfair that people will give you shit for it but fuck them
Does anyone know what Krejcikova wrote in Czech on the camera after the win?
'Czechia you are the best support'
If I remember correctly, it meant "Czechs, you are the best support".
What was written there? I can translate.
I just watched that match point 6 times and that ball was clearly in. Pavyluchenkova got robbed there
Came here to second this
Def looks in. Certainly had to be checked again, which never happened. I’m not saying anything we all don’t know already, just wanted to vent too :( what a crappy ending
She hasn't lost a match in a long time
Martina won this tournament a lot.
Including dubs had mixed dubs
Was that call correct on match point?!
I replayed it on my TV, looks in to me for sure. Well in.
Why didn’t the umpire check that call? Looked close and skidded
Seemed weird to me too
The lines people did Pavs dirty on the match point. Technology should be brought into Roland Garros as soon as possible!
The best story is how Barbora was convinced to give Singles another chance when she played an exhibition with fellow Czech players during lockdown last year.
Now she's done better than all of them in Roland-Garros lol
From TV the ball seemed to be clearly in, on the other hand so did the contentious ball from the SF and hawkeye said it was out. I really don't get why the umpire didn't check it, tho.
Interesting ending. But Babs is a very rich lady now, good for her
Especially considering Czech standards of living haha
You probably meant exchange rate. The Czech Rep has higher QoLife ranking than France, Ireland, Italy and many others
I meant cost of living rather :) you are right, it was incorrect choice of words.
Quality of life here is really good.
That last ball seemed pretty in. Why is there no replays
Very strange that they haven’t shown a better angle or at least a slower replay.
No mentions from broadcasters either.
Considering Jana used to be her coach. It is huge for her and yeah
Krej's speech is hilarious.
She has been on a tear this year. Congrats to her. Her singles clay record has lowkey been really good too so she might be someone to look out for during clay season.
Bummer for Pavlyuchenkova but I love the optimism. What a tournament for her. Hope the best for her. Never stop trying while you can.
I'm really happy for her! She played great all tournament!
It was a shame that Pavs' injury affected the match.
So so sad for pavs
Kinda sucks about Pavs, the injury. She competed admirably after that, but the only way she was winning that final set without being able to push off on that leg was if Krejcikova crumbled.
Krejcikova kept her head together \*just\* enough.
They fucked up the anthem..
You don't understand, it was just an avantgarde composition.
Live WTA Race:
Wow. Krejcikova is less than 100 points away from Barty now. While this result may seem random, it’s been a very steady build up and anyone who paid attention could see this coming.
People who said that "there are no big names in the semi finals" clearly hadn't paid attention to the tour leading up to RG
All 4 ladies had been having amazing seasons
Congratulations to her but also to Pavs who played valiantly until the end even with her injury
That last ball was in and they didn’t even try to check
Did they screw up the match point call? I saw it on the line
Last ball might have looked way in due to the angle, although body language of both players implies that there's a good chance it may have been in, very weird
Someone who's failed to get into the main draw of Wimbledon and the US Open since 2014 just won the French. This is the product of hard work and believing in yourself.
True bestie. So many injuries including the final. A meh tournament but a win's a win.
I feel for Pav. She really gave it her all despite the injury.
Can someone share the link to the last point
IMO the MP "out situation" was not handled properly by ump.
He should've checked the ball mark. It was a champ point and if player asks for checking, it should be respected even for more obvious outs
Bara and Pavs did everything good here: Pavs singaled "check", Bara showed the mark with a racket...
just my 0.02$
Anyhoo, great win by Babs :)
So happy for her. Understated style and the underdog. I love players like her. Cilic on men's side is similar. And she also won the doubles I think. What a breakout tournament for her.
Edit: Hasn't yetbwon the doubles. Thanks for correcting me.
she’s in the finals
the women's doubles finals are tomorrow, but she very well could win them too
Can't wait for Sara Sorribes Tormo to win Wimbledon 🙄
I think the time is ripe for Maria Camila Osorio Serrano
You mean Laylah Fernandez 🙄
Last ball was in. Empire should have at least checked the mark. Weirdest ending ever.
does she know she won cuz it looks like she just won a 4th rd
not everyone needs to be dancing and screaming y'all. let her live
Don't think anyone ever saw Barbora as a singles Grand Slam champion but she deserved it with how she's played the past 2 weeks. She's grown on me as both a player & a person.
It's sad for Pavs as this was likely her best chance to win a grand slam but she's proven to herself this time that she has the game to pass the quarter finals.
It would actually be a really cool story if Pavs made more GS finals -- child prodigy with a very respectable 2nd tier pro career who everyone expects to play a few more years and fade away, but then she makes RG final and follows it up by breaking into the top 5 and winning a slam or two. In reality though she just doesn't seem to care that much about winning a GS. She stated that her friends and family coming to watch her play was more important than the trophy. She didn't even bother to make the umpire check the mark on the match point ball that did look inside the line on TV.
That was a good speech by Pavs. Great sportsmanship. Congratulations to Krejcikova 🎉
She looks about as excited as finding out there's free guac at chipotle today
We are generally not as expressive as Western countries. She feels a shitload on the inside I am sure, but she is not going to be jumping and crying for show if she doesn’t feel like it. She’s not the first Czech athlete to react mildly to victory.
Very interesting! I have only been to Prague for a short time so i don't know much about Czech culture
She definitely did feel a lot as she expressed in her speech but i think perhaps too she has subdued her emotions because she got used to managing her expectations after her not so great results in the past.
Osaka could've gone quite far in this RG if she didn't start a press embargo
She needs to develop a "Fuck the clay I'm too good to be bad on dirt" attitude like Medved
She would've lost to Ana Bogdan or Badosa considering her level
Well everyone's gotta start somewhere. Took Medvedev four R1 exits to get going.
gone far but i think she was far from iga from being the favorite so i don't think it's an asterisk championship by any means
That felt more like a second/third round match than a final lol
Such is the dilemma when having this many upsets and underperformances. The underdog story is great but the Final naturally has almost no storyline or buildup to it. Krejcikova was literally 5-4 at Slam main draws before this event.
im curious what her ⚡ tattoo means
It’s crazy she’s won 5 grand slam doubles titles! It’s rare to see someone go from doubles success to singles success...pretty much unheard of!
She won some challenger or Grand Slam? Cause judging by her reaction Im not sure
She saw the ball was in. Didn't know how to react.
Yeah she saw it was in, then marked the spot and started celebrating, seems legit. It was out, if it wasn't pavs would like to check it.
Pavs was clearly in doubt. She signaled it with her racket. Umpire did shitty job calling it a match already. Krejcikova made a shitty human being. It is for the second time now. And after the same thing happening to her.
This is just disgusting, what you are saying, There were two referees really close to that shot and they both agreed it was clear out. Pavlyuchenkova didn't protested it. And you? You saw no close up replay of that shot and have the audacity of calling someone cheater.
Ah yes, because Refs never made idiotic and/or false decisions. She asked for it to be checked and the Ump just ignored it. I literally couldn't give a fuck which of them wins, I don't even watch WTA, but this is clearly a terrible decision to not double check the ball mark.
Awwwww Pavs is taking it like a true champion!!!!
Hope Krejcikova can sweep the doubles too with Siniakova, should be cool to see her play against Mattek Sands and Swiatek
Definitely a winner for Pointless in few years time
Winner of becoming a real annoying trivia question
No coaching violation on match point?
Anyway congrats babs.
What did you see?
Any tennis is better than no tennis. But this tennis was so boring.
Barbara losing her mind right now lol
This trophy ceremony haha
They felt the need to do something to compete with KIA man. I gotta say this is quite amusing though.
/have a link to what the song towards the end was? It was sung very emotively by this woman in a yellow dress, along with a Cellist(?) and a pianist iirc.
Voila by Barbara Pravi, it finished second at this year's Eurovision Song Contest. https://youtu.be/Unj9WbeLzRU
Really happy for her. It's bittersweet because I was rooting for Pavs simply because she's a vet and has been looking for her breakthrough for so long, and who knows if she'll ever get this chance again.
With that said, Krejcikova rolled through this tournament and imo was as deserving as it gets.
Congratulations to Barbora Krejcikova on winning her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
I wanted pav to win but i'm really happy for barb. She is a different kind of player and has her own unique style. The best month of her life.
Massive congrats to Barbora! What an incredible tournament for her and Pavs.
Also, fuck the mods for how they treated this match, pisses me off so much that it took forever to create a match thread. Show a bit of respect for the women's game.
I’m sorry, but I’ve replayed the MP ball multiple times and it clearly hit the line.
Hawk eye just showed it to be out
Do you have a screenshot or something
You cant see it properly on TV jeez.
If they didnt even check properly, then it wasnt needed.
Her reaction was based on her experience from SF, thats why awkward ending.
Credit to Krejcikova, but that was the worst women’s tournament in years. Most of the top players get injured, and then one of the players in the finals gets injured and can barely move in the last set.
Not to mention Krejcikova’s poor sportsmanship in her extended bathroom break (as she literally always does when losing).
Also, watching the replay, that last shot on match point was literally inside the line. Very bad from the umpire to not check the mark.
are you crediting her or hating on her lol
Crediting her for her win, but pointing out her continued bad sportsmanship
Like No.1 Barty said, "bathroom break/medical break isn't against the rule, i dont see a problem there. "
It’s not against the rule. It is bad sportsmanship though
Good for her but I’m exhausted lol. I feel like through the entire tournament, every match I watched the person I rooted for ended up losing. Maybe I need a different strategy for watching these matches
So the women’s final is an unseeded player and the 31st seed, meanwhile the men’s semi’s featured 1, 3, 5, and 6? Women’s tennis is so bizarre.
Men's tennis would be a lot different if they had best of 3 tbqh
Not really, men’s tennis is pretty consistent in non-slam events as well
Under no circumstances would an unseeded player and the 31 seed be playing for the title.
It's possible. I mean we have had very low seeds v. Unseeded players before in men's. Guga's first title was him playing the bottom seed
Weird ending, congrats to her! Her coach is more emotional than she is
Congrats to Krejcikova. Her first slam and hopefully will give her confidence to do well throughout the entire year.
If she wins the doubles final tomorrow she’ll be the first person since Mary Pierce to achieve this feat.
Well, i watched few replays from few sources and the ball was IN. Of course Umpire should check so it's his fault but Krejcikova behawiour was far from fair play. She even blocked questions about it on ger IG.
And what is even more interesting - one sport booking provider in Poland blocked options to post anything about this topic at his forum. Will not even mention how quiet it is in media about it. Awfull finale.
I watched the slow motion replay posted on Twitter as well...looks really close and in my honest opinion could have touched the line and skidded out or landed outside. Hawkeye shows it was out though with some margin.
Damn I lost another prediction.
Barbora looks very Slavic.
Either it hasn't hit her or she is like this is just the start.
I'm going with the former
