Rac3318

Apparently Taylor Fritz had knee surgery?

onyxrose81

He hurt his knee on the last point of his last RG match. I think it was the meniscus.

TinKnightRisesAgain

Big oof reading the comments in the Federer thread. I love him. Truly. He's the most brilliant tennis player of all time. But at some point you have to face reality. At what point do you stop saying "That's what they said in 2017!" and realize that at some point Federer will be too old to play tennis at a level enough to win grand slams? At 45? At 50? He's injured, he's had multiple surgeries, and he's 39 years old. At some point you have to let go.

Managery

He just made the 4th round of a major. That's a good result for most of the top 50. Why would he stop competing if he's still firmly at the top of tennis?

PancakesandProust

Never We have not had enough of him 😭 I know we had 20 years but that’s not enough

Managery

Is anyone really scared for Wimbledon. It feels like fed is really looking forward to it and if he loses early i can see him retiring in frustration.

[deleted]

Is Federer the only person playing Wimbledon?

Managery

No but he's my favorite player, bitch.

chakokat

Then you have reason to be scared.

Equidae2

haha

Frathier

Pretty rude.

[deleted]

A redundant comment to my question.

Lebrons_right_nipple

Hey mate. Need something from you tonight? Please, any tips?

Frathier

Cilic to win Wimbledon.

nachtigalz

Djokovic owns Cilic. There’s no way.

Frathier

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Mysonking

Honestly I think so. Nobody is talking about him, but the guy really has a game

ChocolateSnowflake

Noones really talking about him because it’s easy to forget how good Marin is on grass, especially after a 2 year break and when he’s not really done much on hard or clay this year to set himself up as a threat.

razorsharp3000

For Fed’s sake I hope Wimbledon plays like clay. LOL

hopez11

Sebi vs Kei tomorrow. Fuck me I'll be sad either way

rogerthatkn

What did Fed say in the press conference?

Pisces_Mermaid

So Federer came out and said the only reason he delayed press was because he was frustrated and didn’t want to say anything wrong out of frustration (lol) So does that put the injury fear mongering to bed

thcm123

Not really. I feel like he’s definitely not 100% and didn’t want to say something he might regret or get blown out of proportion by the press, that’s my take. Sigh. So sad to see him like this, but I feel like his body is just day to day right now. Also, saw some tweets that said he only asked for questions in English, as he normally takes questions in 3 languages. So a bit odd.

jgwil2

If he speaks German he may be too honest

[deleted]

No, obviously not, since Federer has almost never announced an injury at a press conference to my knowledge. It was pretty clear something wasn’t right out there. People get annoyed at this because they somehow read that as Federer fans finding excuses, as if him being injured would in any way benefit us. It would mean imminent, if not immediate retirement. These debates about narrative are absolutely ludicrous.

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

Just realised guaranteed a Brit in the last 4 at Queens

Big_Accident577

I didn't expect a fight tennis-wise by Fogna after he said he hates grass and especially Wimbledon, but he had Cilic in trouble in the second. Nice win for Marin, serving big with 82% of points won with his 1st serve and completing 36 winners against 13 UEs. Not that bad from Fabio, with 18 winners and 12 UEs.

caganessa24

Missed this Cilic. Too good

smalliebigs69

He even seems to be moving better than I've seen him recently

caganessa24

He's playing too good right now. I think he's going for the title here in London.

Omegatron64

Lol @ whoever said Fognini had a winnable path to the semis here on grass. Next up: De Minaur. In case anyone forgets [the last time Cilic and De Minaur played](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47C-iTQQ0SU)...given form and surface, advantage probably Cilic, but who knows.

ChocolateSnowflake

Cilic hitting a nice little run of form

jchristpriv

Really forget how good Cilic is on grass

vartholomew-jo

I hate seeing fed like that. After his performances at RG I started to believe he could do nice things on grass... anyway from whom do you think will FAA is going to lose in the final? Or is still early for any predictions... maybe it is

ChocolateSnowflake

Felix needs to get through (most likely) Zverev in the semis before he can think about the final.

idlidosai

Let's go fognini!

Big_Accident577

Cilic holds after a warning and a set point down. TB.

GhostofTeholnbugg

Great to see Keys playing well. Been kinda out in the wilderness since 2019.

Sperrow8

I was thinking Sabalenka will probably be really good on grass given her serve and power, but forgot about the really obvious part where what happens when those area of her game aren't working properly. She need some work on those other areas.

smalliebigs69

I've never seen her stand so far back on return like she was today. I get that Keys has a big serve but to me just indicated that she wasn't sure what to do.

Sperrow8

Most likely can't handle the surface like she thought. Pros and cons of grass I suppose.

Chiswell123

Wow that was impressive from Keys.

_rob___

The third set in the Sabalanka/Keys match was excellent. Congrats to Madison!!

ChocolateSnowflake

Come on Cilic!

neyiat

Omg Madison Keys!!!! Bye bitchy Sabalenka

Big_booty_ho

Oy Sabalenka

smalliebigs69

Really good stuff from Keys. Hopefully she can build on this.

ahsalmonskinroll

Keys and Sabalenka have the same: - outfit - racket - hairstyle Insert meme of Spidermen pointing at each other

jgwil2

Also playing style

cooldude1991

Go Madison!!

anujbeatles

Just as artists stay far away from reading reviews of their work, if I were Fed/Fed's team rn, I'd totally avoid social media/ any type of media until the start of Wimbledon, other than the mandatory press.. the game's still there. The confidence is not, looked good in the first half of the match tho. Reading dumb comments online can only hurt the confidence and increase self doubt. Just keep believing in yourself and do your best.

Big_booty_ho

He’s 39 years old. Why would he care what internet trolls have to say

anujbeatles

He shouldn't.. But social media is addictive for everyone. If he's on it/anyone from his family's on it.. he's bound to come across these dumb comments at some point. We know it's affected Andy a lot and it's a sad truth about being a sportsperson on the decline/trying to make a comeback..

jchristpriv

Fognini looking dangerous in this second set, leads 4-1

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

Was out with the dog at that score line; turned around quickly lol

jchristpriv

It did yeah 🤣 Cilic found his first serve. Fognini did have set point at 6-5 but a beautiful ace saved it.

sprgsmnt

what tournament are you watching?

jchristpriv

Queens Club. I'm in the UK so it's available on Prime and BBC

vngbusa

Federer hasn’t showed up to press yet which is very unusual for him, normally shows up very quickly after matches win or lose. You can infer lots from this and we’ll find out soon enough, but it suggests some issue that needed fairly urgent treatment if it is delaying press. And he wasn’t moving well at all towards the end, with a basically powerless serve. Edit: Federer will show up to press after Struff, who just lost. So we will see.

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

I don’t think he’ll enter Wimbledon unless he thinks he can do some damage.

BoJackie-O

I only caught the last couple of games, but it made me think of the 5th set of that USO match he lost to Dimitrov. Might be his back that’s bothering him, something definitely wasn’t right

producersrace

I came here to discuss this. Let’s hope it’s nothing I can’t imagine the R word happening just before Wimbledon. So sad

jgwil2

Literally started tearing up thinking about it

smalliebigs69

Keys-Sabalenka heating up!

lostinmoss

With Giron beating Struff, the streak of people doing bad in the matches after beating Medvedev continues. For reference, here are all the immediately following results of people hes lost to: 1. Djokovic - Beat Sinner in Monte Carlo, then lost to Evans 2. Lajovic - Lost to Coric in Rotterdam 3. RBA - Lost to Sinner in Miami 4. Garin - Lost to Berrettini in Madrid 5. Karatsev - Lost to Opelka in Rome 6. Tsitsipas - Beat Zverev at RG, then lost to Djokovic 7. Struff - Lost to Giron in Halle

neeltennis93

Tbf Giron played really well. You can see he earned the win, hitting forehand winner after forehand winner. He didn’t make many unforced errors as well. It was just a really clean and tight match by Giron. It wasn’t so much Struff playing badly

lostinmoss

You could say that for a lot of these matches. The point was more "bad result" than "bad play".

neeltennis93

Fair

neeltennis93

It’s so crazy how a big server like Struff looks untouchable on his serve in the first set. Then in the second set it’s like opposing players finished “decoding” the serve and it’s no longer unstoppable

Omegatron64

Vekic comes through in a tough match! Failed to serve it out at 5-2, with Giorgi saving 3 match points on Vekic's serve, but finally got it done. Impressed that Vekic can play in a pullover in 77 F (25 C). I'd be sweating.

ChocolateSnowflake

Didn’t think Giron would get through Struffi. Good for him.

starboys23

Cant wait to get my dick wet tonight

cooldude1991

Amazing by Keys

GhostofTeholnbugg

Cilic a dark horse for a decent run at Wimbledon?

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

Probably an early upset

monsieurartois

Vekic v. Giorgi on the grass: the way these two can hit the ball, it's a shame they haven't developed into top-10 players, as the potential is certainly there.

starboys23

Giorgi needs a new coach and someone to tell her that perhaps a drop shot or slice, and some finesse over power hitting could win her matches.

monsieurartois

Absolutely, she's needed different coaching for a decade now.

starboys23

Sadly i get the vibe that she’s a beautiful woman with various interests who also happens to be an amazing tennis player. Like she doesn’t care about the results and doesn’t think too hard in critical moments because she’s like “oh well my dress company got air time - back to chilling in italy i guess!” I can’t help but feel she just enjoys traveling and being semi well known more than fixing her actual game lol.

monsieurartois

Looks great in those little dresses, at least!

ChocolateSnowflake

I really like Fogninis kit but not altogether. It should be the shirt or the shorts that colour, not both.

GhostofTeholnbugg

I think Korda is the best American tennis player right now. I don't mean potentially in the future, I mean in terms of actual play in 2021.

Chiswell123

You think he beats Kei tomorrow?

GhostofTeholnbugg

Wouldn't be shocked. Kei is in mediocre form these days and grass is his worst surface.

thombo-1

I keep thinking Tiafoe is ranked much higher than he actually is for some reason

GhostofTeholnbugg

He used to be a lot higher ranked - in 2018 he had the Delray Beach win and in 2019 he had the QFs in AO and Miami. But since then he hasn't had any big results to buoy his rank over his lapses in form. 1-14 vs top 20 players in his last 15 matches, as opposed to 7-19 before that.

ChocolateSnowflake

Race to Turin agrees with you, he’s the highest ranked US player for 2021.

lostinmoss

I mean he's the highest in the race by like 20 positions, and the second best is McDonald. The Americans haven't been too good this year.

GhostofTeholnbugg

Yeah, fair enough, may be obvious. I was just thinking my feelings on the matter had evolved substantially from where I thought of him as a potential huge player in the future to someone who had already eclipsed Fritz, Opelka, and Isner as the best American player.

Mister_Lizard

Fognini picks a garish outfit to stand out and be noticed, but then they colour match the whole stadium to him. I bet he's not happy.

stateofgrace2

idk if this is a common take but i feel like if/when aryna manages to harness her power a tiny bit more, especially in grand slams, she could just dominate the wta tour altogether. i see so much potential in her, due to middling performances in slams she isnt one of the first names on people's mind when they think about future great players but i really like her odds

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

She has no real variety in her game and when her game goes off it goes off. Plus she doesn’t have the mind of champion that’s why she hasn’t been that good at the slams.

stateofgrace2

we're talking potential here and both of these elements can be improved upon, over the last few months she's been toying more w slices and dropshots. idt it makes much sense to claim that "having the mind of champions" isnt something that can improve with time, effort and experience

blank0ver

I think that Sabalenka just isn't as good as people say, that ultra level is unsustainable and when things start to go south she doesn't have the plan B to bring them back.

stateofgrace2

that's the thing tho, we agree that she has a lot to improve on but she's already in the top 4 and will likely reach the top 3 sometimes soon so that level clearly is sustainable to some extent, sometimes for entire weeks. like you i can identify some flaws in her game and yet she's already doing so well, hence why i think there's a lot of potential there

Idrisopiso

Struff vs Giron is basically an ace-festival

neeltennis93

It’s gotten a bit more rallies in the second and third set but the first set looked like two serve bots playing eachother

thombo-1

It's a fair point. For example Madrid is very different from Roland Garros. It's a big reason why Rafa hasn't won more of those (while winning every other clay major 10+ times). I realise I'm grasping at straws 😅

thombo-1

Getting downvoted for the most reasonable post imaginable is pretty much what I've come to expect from this sub these days.

Confident-Chair5821

Halle is faster than Wimbledon. It is the only thing that comes to my mind but it could also be a huge factor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Confident-Chair5821

After all that's the only thing we can do, isn't it?

ChocolateSnowflake

According to Fed the court surface is vastly different and always has been.

ahsalmonskinroll

The jingle that plays at the Berlin matches is so happy and cute

starboys23

Sabalenka serving up breadsticks

raysofdavies

Apparently Federer is taking a long time to come to the press conference? Hopefully just cooling down first and not any actual issues

xXXChelseaFanXXx

I've been playing with a single handed backhand usually, but yesterday I played against a player who hit with a decent amount of topspin and I kept shanking my backhand, was barely able to land it back. I'm contemplating switching to a double hander but need to practice it since I've only always played with a single hander. Does it make sense or should i just practice my single hander more? I was shocked at how unstable the single hander felt against the topspin forehands. It has always felt natural this far (but maybe i just played worse players who don't hit with spin)

raysofdavies

Hi Roger, I think this question is a little late in your career! But the most important thing is to have fun and be yourself. Lots of love, Stefan

ExoticSignature

I am sad about Roger's loss but your comment here got a few chuckles out. Thanks mate.

manifest2000

Stefan….as in Djokovic’s son? 🤣😂

raysofdavies

Lol I meant Edberg but it’s funnier that way

RealChiropractor

I just want to say that the mental gymnastics that some Federer fans are employing to rationalize his loss today deserve an Olympic gold medal.

cody_d_baker

I see more Djokovic fans commenting on so called “Fed fans” rationalizing anything than I do Fed fans actually rationalizing anything. Mostly we realize the end is nigh and are sad our favorite player is no longer competitive

[deleted]

It’s honestly ridiculous. As if we wanted our guy to be injured. We just want him to be out there and have fun because we like to see him play. It reflects a remarkable level of insecurity—despite Fed folks widely acknowledging Novak as GOAT in the past week.

cody_d_baker

It is completely ridiculous. Federer was my childhood hero and will always be the GOAT in my heart, but even I must admit that Djokovic will probably end up with all the records and the most convincing case. I just don’t know why Djokovic fans on this sub have to go so far out of their way to slander Fed. We get it, your guy won.

[deleted]

I couldn’t have said it better. Their favorite line is “he’s old as fuck” which is all that you should know about these people. Like, yeah, thanks, didn’t know that. As if we won’t all get up there one day.

[deleted]

Okay, these straw man "Fed Fans" arguments are getting a little annoying. For the overwhelming majority, no one is rationalizing anything. People are just mostly sad to see their favorite player look fragile, and potentially injured two weeks before a major.

Pisces_Mermaid

Where was he potentially injured - I just don’t think anyone but fed fans see it

[deleted]

Did you watch the game or not? Because it was quite obvious the guy wasn’t moving at all. Besides, you should understand that at this point pointing out serious injury is hardly rationalization, since it implies very imminent retirement.

Pisces_Mermaid

yeah he wasn’t moving cuz he’s old as shit. No joke. Federer did press and no one reported any injury

[deleted]

Obviously he is old as hell for an athlete. But apparently you are too dense to grasp that injury typically goes hand-in-hand with advanced age. Edit: you make it seem like as if we wanted our favorite player to be injured. Do you understand how absolutely ridiculous that sounds?

RealChiropractor

go read the comments in the various related threads. there is absolutely nothing "strawman" about it

[deleted]

Uhh, today, I saw nothing but despair in the game thread when things went South. Not mental gymnastics. Besides, I find Federer fans have been quite fair when it comes to admitting Novak’s dominance since RG. But as usual in this debate, I guess it’s never enough.

timb1223

Those Brits are pretty good on grass, huh.

neeltennis93

Whoever the DJ is at Halle deserves a fucking medal. Simple plan, smash mouth, now they’re playing Africa by Toto. Fucking fire playlist. The whole room would be screaming the lyrics at the house parties I went to in Manhattan pre pandemic

Leotabbycat

Also Oasis!

neeltennis93

And now Green Day. I must hire this dj for my wedding

riquelm

I must hate myself because I root for Bublik.

veozet

Kind of fun and enjoyable to watch the guy's highlights but I can imagine it's really depressing to be his fan though

WinterSunshine22

Instead of a Russian match-up (Karatsev-Bublik), we get a British one (Norrie-Draper) But it´s London, so good for them. :)

slayer_of_potatoes

This shit is fucking unbearable. I'll see how I feel tomorrow, but it might be better for me if I just stay the fuck away from tennis for a couple of weeks. There's nothing but pain here.

caganessa24

why? betting?

slayer_of_potatoes

No. I never gamble. I just get way too invested in it and it hurts.

Ashru987

If it affects you that much you should probably take a break. I feel like it’s always good to have a little mental reprieve from the sport. It can be strangely taxing.

ExoticSignature

I feel you, man. It's just sad.

SilentCaveat

Nothing but suffering. Although I do think I get over losses pretty quickly now after the monstrosity that Wim\*y 2019 was. Numb to everything now

ExoticSignature

As much as I would like to say it was just one match, the fact that he hasn't even come to the presser yet scares me.

SilentCaveat

Yep I am refreshing twitter for updates but still nothing. He usually gets done with pressers right after a match so this is pretty worrying

Styxen

Wait Draper has only played tiebreaks in this tournament so far? Haha

neeltennis93

Let’s go giron!!

ChocolateSnowflake

Bublik absolutely gave up there but nothing away from Draper, he played well

Omegatron64

Positive spin for the Brits: you have a guaranteed semifinalist! Negative spin: only one of Draper and Norrie come through. 😬

TheToyHero

Draper earning that Wimbledon wildcard

speaky_creatures

i always wanna hear what bublik says at the net :-(

Dorvek

"Up for a pint or 2 after your shower mate?"

hopez11

Fucking hell bublik

veozet

Bublick did a Bublick thing. Haizzzz...

SwedishTurnip

Draper's got a wonderful game for grass

ParfaitPleasant

Federer, Karatsev, Bianca, Svitolina, Bublik... Have a good day people.

Ashru987

Grass is wild.

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

Sabalenka lost 1st set

solitarysniper

There's a bit of an Andy Roddick style to the way Draper plays. This guy seems like he could be another British top 100 mainstay in a few years time if he refines his net play and all-court game

Itoxicdemon

He's gotta work on his fitness as the main thing, he's had quite an amount of retirements from fatigue already

Ashru987

He collapsed in Miami right?

Itoxicdemon

Yeah he collapsed after the first set, granted it was very hot that day, but he's had similar issues in itf matches too

neyiat

Yass Keys

Styxen

7-0 tiebreak wtf?

ParfaitPleasant

Pretty sure Bublik does his own haircut

slim13shady

I love how this entire sub turns into Johnny Drama from Entourage when Aslan's calves make an appearance

forzamaria

Bublik is such a mug

Sophony

Tanklik

ChocolateSnowflake

Bublik gives no fucks. What was that serving

Itoxicdemon

I hope Jack Draper can use this tournament and maybe propel himself up the rankings a bit. Would love to have a young Brit to root for (No offense to GOAT Norrie)

Ddmoo

Been keeping an eye on him since he came runner up at Wimbledon Juniors. Would be nice to see him finally take off.

ImTheImpostor69

That challenge was nuts

forzamaria

Bublik got his outfit from lost property for PE

Styxen

Damn, one of the closest challenges I've ever seen

ChocolateSnowflake

Very good first set from Struffi. He’s playing quite well at the net.

forzamaria

Bublik saying he wasnt ready on a second serve. Abit naughty....

ImTheImpostor69

Draper with the Djokosmash

smalliebigs69

Keys forehand slice approach?! who knew?

MrDeco97

Bublik is so funny, he knew he was losing the game so he served like an absolute moron going to the net on every point and hitting drop shots, confused the hell out of the guy who made a bunch of dumb mistakes, and then broke him in the next game.

nachtigalz

Bublik’s shirt can’t decide if it’s a v neck or u neck. On the plus side he got rid of the neck beard.

Ashru987

Thank god.

Richevszky

No model, no fit, no style. Just vibes.

FlyReasonable6560

nice to see Bublik do well this year, I think he can pull this match out

Ashru987

Bublik ain’t dead yet.

hopez11

And he pulls this shit off to break. Never change sasha

forzamaria

Draper choked

Ddmoo

Well he is English...

neeltennis93

Damn it’s Struff serve is just too good

ChocolateSnowflake

Halle now playing Simple Plan. My 14 year old heart is happy.

neeltennis93

Lmaooooo I noticed that too

slayer_of_potatoes

Federer lost. Karatsev lost. Bublik is about to lose. Murray is going to get crushed tomorrow and Zverev is going to win Halle. Can this week just fucking end already

lostinmoss

Could always switch to following challengers

ImTheImpostor69

What a bad day, Karatsev, Bublik and Federer gone

TheToyHero

Bublik always hits a failed underarm serve and then goes and sits down and laughs to himself 😂😂

[deleted]

Had Draper to beat Bublik too! https://imgur.com/a/h48fhDk
