3 Russians have reached the finals of their respective tournaments:
Kasatkina in Birmingham, Samsonova in Berlin and Rublev in Halle
Berrettini to win Wimbledon
After trailing by a set and 0-5 down against top seeds Hsieh/Mertens, and saving 5 match points, Ons Jabeur and Ellen Perez fight back to win the match 3-6, 7-5, [10-3].
Jabeur is through to the finals in singles and doubles in Birmingham.
I saw the score at 5-0 in the second set and figured i have seen enough of Ons for today. Surprised that Hsieh-mertens lost from such a strong position against a rather inexperienced doubles pair. Good for Ons but hopefully she hasn't pushed herself too much this week to hurt her run Wimbledon.
Oh no. That’s back to back tournaments they’ve had a monumental choke
Poor Hsieh/Mertens becoming quite the choking team
I had to turn it off. After the Swiatek/Mattek-Sands match and now it happens again. It’s difficult watching Hsieh/Mertens completely dissolve during match points. I was hoping they would be a dream team but the inability to close out these matches is hard to watch
How do y’all think FAA and Humbert compare on grass with top 10 nextgen players like Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev?
My issue with FAA specifically (don’t know much about Humbert) is that he always look good until he doesn’t. I’ve never thought there was much between him in terms of purely skill level when it comes to comparing him to the other more high profile next gen members. But FAA can simply break down and choke in the big moments especially at grand slams whereas the other next gen specifically the three you mentioned just know how to turn it on at the majors.
You are comparing players who are 2, 4 and 4,5 years older than him.
I will make a bold prediction. I believe Felix is maturing. He does not seem to get as rattled when he misses or the opponent plays untouchable or lucky shots. I also get the feeling that he means business more than before. He is also more consistent.(Two weeks count, right?)
I believe that this summer or early fall will be his breakthrough season.
Trust me I am probably one of Felix’s biggest supporters on this sub but this consistency that you speak of hasn’t been shown at all this season. I do think he can do big things on grass but all I’m saying is I’ll believe he can beat the top guys when I see it.
I think heading into Wimbledon the playing field is pretty level for the NextGen players since they don't have a lot of experience on grass. FAA and Ugo are definitely impressive though.
I want grand slams to happen every alternate week.
Please God no this subreddit gets so annoying during slams
I kind of wish we just set the sub to private during slams. If you aren't here during 250s and 500s, GTFO.
That's great if you don't care about growing the interest in this sport. I'm willing to assume that the vast majority of fans got into following this sport because of the slams.
The semi final and final match threads were so toxic I had to leave.
Yeah, these threads are at their best during weeks where there are only 250 and 500 tournaments. When only the “real” tennis fans are commenting.
It looks like FAA-Hurkacz will have their chance at a second title. I am very happy with what I see at the net by FAA. Quick and precise.
Much like Cam Norrie, Dasha's having a moment this year as well...onto her 3rd WTA final of the year (and she already won the other two)! Interesting fact about Dasha, this is only her 2nd WTA 250 final. Of her previous 7 WTA finals, 6 have been WTA 500 or premier events!
Idk if all these guys have yet earn the right to be called the "strong" favorite on a grass tournament
So my criteria are mostly based on their current form.
From what I have watched, Berrettini and Humbert playing slightly better tennis than anyone else.
I don’t know why everyone is so desperate to deem someone a favourite or say their better than this person, especially when talking about the next gen on grass. Wimbeldon doesn’t really play like any of the other grass tournaments, on top of that they might look good now because their current competition but all it takes is one run in with a big server or a grass court veteran and they could be out early. This grass season is the most up in the air yet and if your name is not Djokovic I’m certainly not going to have high expectations.
FAA is receiving medical help on his serving hand. Not so good to serve this much with that force.
Ons Jabeur having to play her third match of the day because of scheduling problems, really unlucky for her doubles partner
Dasha and Ons in a final.. i don't care who wins as long as both play a relatively error free game
they played a great final in Moscow a few years back
Azarenka/Sabalenka doubles team lol loudest team I’ve ever heard in any sport
Seems like Shapo needs to work on not falling over.
He is just not that hungry and motivated. When he is playing against someone who is ready to fight for every point like Norrie did it's difficult for him not to lose focus and motivation.
Doubles match with FAA and Hurkacz has started. They took the first game.
Dasha takes the first set!
Samsonova is a female version of Karatsev. Very high peak and powerful shots but you wouldn't want to watch her on a bad day in the office.
I’d never seen her play before, but damn she could definitely be the WTA’s future resident serve bot if she improves her ground strokes a bit. Consistent 166 kmh second serves is just astonishing
Cam Norrie is gonna be seeded at Wimbledon! https://twitter.com/nicklester/status/1406274607951265793
Someone in the replies said, "good call" like it was a human decision. Is there something I'm missing? I thought the highest ranked players get seeded.
No, you're right.
Congrats to Cam, is impressive how much hes improved his game this year
NOOO Simona is out of Homburg :(
flair updated to match my feelings for the last month
Vandeweghe absolutely pummeling the ball out there.
gosh i missed her
Me too! I also like Kasatkina quite a bit, but Coco's so so far from her peak ranking I'm rooting for her.
Samsonova now ranked #77 in the world (could go as high #63 if she wins Berlin) will have to play Wimbledon qualifying on monday unless given a last minute wildcard.
Bolsova now ranked #151 in the world just got a direct entry into Wimbledon because somehow the entry list for that was made before Roland Garros 2019 points dropped off
Does something seem off there for anyone?
> Samsonova now ranked #77 in the world (could go as high #63 if she wins Berlin) will have to play Wimbledon qualifying on monday unless given a last minute wildcard.
She should be given a WC like Alcaraz just by virtue of being in top100.
I'd say she has more of a case for obtaining it because we don't know how good Alcaraz is on grass.
Do they have any wildcards left to give?
one wildcard left
Does Wimbledon not favour British players over other nationalities like Australians and French?
Not only do they favor them with WC which is understandable but they also favor them with double bounce balls/dropping the racket and touching the net. ;-D Kidding, not kidding.
They have given one singles WC to a non-Brit this year. The rest (6 women 4 men) went to Brits.
Oh! They gave wildcards to Baghdatis, Koepfer, Lopez and Niculescu from outside of UK in 2019 which sounds a bit better than what French and Australians usually do.
Not as much as before and certainly more willing to distribute wildcards outside of local players than the other slams. They give occasional wildcards to non big 4 countries and to people who do well at the UK events. Alcaraz got one (despite no previous records on grass) and whoever wins the Nottingham 100k ITF event will probably get the last one for the women.
However there should be a case for Samsonova that a WTA 500 final > itf final…but because one event is held in the UK and the other isn’t that might tip the scale
> However there should be a case for Samsonova that a WTA 500 final > itf final…but because one event is held in the UK and the other isn’t that might tip the scale
Yeah. They spared one WC on "next direct acceptance", wonder if they can avert that.
They do but also they tend to give WCs to players who have exceptional results during the grass season (i.e. winning a grass challenger).
Wow! 3rd ATP final for Norrie this year. Only a matter of time before he wins his first...🤞
He's just outside the top 10 in the race. Real breakthrough season for him.
Hey do you guys know why FAA and Humbert’s match is not on TennisTV?
It is. The match is over so you’d have to go the replays.
I can’t find it in replays and when I go on Schedule of Play it says Finished, not shown..
Nvm i just had to be more patient 😅
If you go to replays than press today’s date it comes up. I just tried it. Hopefully that works.
Norrie will be seeded in Wimby then. Good for him
What's this I'm hearing about Vandeweghe and microwaves?
TC commentators were saying she microwaved something that she wasn’t supposed to and burned her hand
Still not as stupid as Rublev hurting his wrist while slamming a door in anger
Eastbourne wta is packed. Sabalenka, Svitolina, Bianca, AnPavs, Jabeur, Swiatek, Gauff, Badosa, Rybakina...
There are some good players in the qualifiers, never mind the main draw.
The draw is insane.
Berlin was also stacked but somehow we had a Cornet SF and a Samsonova Final😂
Great win for Norrie and overall a great year for him.
The only thing that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth was Shapo being forced to play a matcg over two days as 2nd seed. Just because he’s not british... I doubt it played that much into this result, but if it did, it sucks.
>Shapo being forced to play a matcg over two days as 2nd seed.
That had zero to do with Shapo not being British, that was the fault of the rain + de Minaur/Cilic going to three sets.
I mean the torrential rain messed up the schedule to be fair to Queen's Club. Agree it's not ideal but I think you have to give organisers benefit of the doubt when the rain is falling hard.
Both players look good for Wimbledon though. How far do you Shapo going there?
Of course it’s deliberate.
When will you Canucks get tired of being second class citizens of a long gone empire? Asking as a friend.
Well next time maybe he should try being British then
It hasn’t helped Johanna Konta.....
Or Kyle Edmund
That’s big brain
That’s what Norrie has done lol
Cam is a pretty handsome fella lbh
Not my cup of tea🤭
Norrie for the title!
Norrie has been throwing out marbles the whole tournament. First Karatsev taking the tumbles and now Shapo. He’s dangerous.. literally haha
Bweh back to his 500 form I guess..
Disappointed he doesn’t have a clay court 500 this season
Shapo fell at all the important moments like Aslan.
Cam Norrie is like the Krejcikova of the ATP for me. I know he's playing well and winning matches but I just haven't happened to watch, like, any of his matches to know what he's doing well.
I guess this means he's winning Wimbledon.
If he wins here he will be overhyped by the BBC and lose first round
damn both Canadians out back to back. To be fair to both, Norrie and Humbert played incredible matches.
Overall I'd still say Aliassime had so many chances to take this match from Humbert who wasn't even that good in the first set but still won it, though he was sublime in that tiebreaker in the third...
Let’s goooooo, Norrie!
Norrie has been the better player, he really does deserve the win.
Yes, this is a very bad/disappointing loss for shapo though. He keeps finding new roadblocks to to the top 10.
The Shapo "poetry in motion", laser-guided missile backhand
The Norrie shovel
Man that norrie backhand is pretty sick though. Fun watching people step up to crush it only to realize the ball has skidded only to about shin level and they have to slice or block it back.
Yeah it's been great watching him zip opponents with it this season
How come the grass at Queens is so much better than in Halle
The Halle court is constructed from panels of grass brought in on trucks, its probably dying before the tournament starts. Queens actually, you know, grows the grass on the court.
Brita know how to actually take care of their grass.
it genuinely looks like a desert out there
Samsonova might win Wimbledon???
But I don't wanna see that. There are already too many Russians.
Her monster serve might take her deep tho if she gets a favorable draw
Wimby historically is the worst slam for Russians. No Russian except Sharapova even made a final there.
There can never be too many Russians.
What’s Shappo on about
Vika lost what??? I was watching FAA
Samsonova's ground strokes are no joke. Final with Bencic shud be good tomorrow
why does my heart keep getting crushed by the 3 Canadians..but fucking still supports them whole heartedly.
Bibi won a grand slam so I don’t think its fair to include her in this group. FAA and shapo always find ways to disappoint though. Its also a canadian sports thing too cuz the jays are the same.
Us Canadians must be masochists, there’s no other explanation.
Because that’s what Canadians do
People were laughing at the Habs
So Halle final short curly hair vs long straight hair who wins?
I would consider Rublev’s hair wavy not straight.
It's wavy when it's humid but straight otherwise, but yeah it's more wavy
FAA won 7 more points in the match. How disappointing for him!
Do you guys know know how much rest time a player should be awarded before playing a double?
Sweet sweet revenge
Personally, I didn’t have Samsonova destroying Vika like that, but grass does weird things.
Ugo and 3rd set tbs, the iconic duo we didn't know we needed
OMG this roll of FAA is almost cruel
Ugo what is your strategy for this match?
Humbert: just paint lines in the 3rd set tiebreak I guess
Excellent hold from shapo.
Many missed bp chances in the 3rd. Didn't play that bad in the tiebreak, Ugo was painting lines all over the place
he blew a bunch of BPs against Federer in the first set.
Querrey, Zverev, Korda, FAA. Damn, Ugo.
Legend says that everytime Ugo beats a next gen player he acquires their abilities
Noooooo he only took the first serve
are you saying he's going to beat himself in the final?
well he gets the 500 king so this might be as good as it gets
That has to be one of the worst challenges I've ever seen from Norrie lmao
Great stuff from Ugo. Felix has made one final and one close semi final on grass. Nothing to be ashamed off at all.
Ugo doing great on grass once again.
Same amount of winners. Unforced errors? 26 for Felix, 25 for Humbert
Unforced errors in the tb? 1 from FAA
That’s all it came down to.
Felix now has to go to play doubles without rest?
They always will get "suitable rest"
The match is scheduled to start in 15 minutes.
Knowing that FAA was still in Doubles why wasn’t his Singles match first??
Makes no sense.
The ATP sheet I'm sure says after suitable rest
Jesus, Ugo was unplayable on some of those points
can't lose a final if you don't make the final
It's big brain time
Big brain moves
Ugh... All those BPs in the third
Ugo ice cold in that tiebreak.
Yay good match I hope Ugo can go all the way
He's up against the 500 King... but I hope he wins too!
Would be massive for his confidence if he could win, he could finally continue his 2020 year-end form
What an amazing/bizarre match
HUMBERT!!! closer than it needed, but great clutchness
FAA has shit the bed what else is new
Only in the semi-final though. His speciality is making it to the final then losing.
Humbert just painting lines faa can't really do much about that
The LTA’s subtle favoritism for Norrie by making Shapo play double duty is paying off I see.
Jokes aside, good on Norrie but really want that Shapo-Berrettini grass matchup.
Both these guys can hopefully have deep runs at Wimby this year
Humbert playing unreal tennis right now
The cameraman just loves the girl in yellow
Are they both serving great, or are they just both not great returners?
This is the same humbert that’s choked countless matches away this year? That can’t be right
Clutch. So good
The momentum is with Humbert.
Humbert got destroyed in the last couple of TBs he played against FAA.
You can't destroy an opponent in TB unless it's 7-6(0)
One of them was 10-8 what
Humbert choked hard while serving for the second set.
Thats still not "destroyed"
It's kinda crazy that Humbert and FAA have played three matches and they've all been on grass.
Samsonova is absolutely destroying Vika.
A 3rd set tb is all I need right now let's go boys
5 uncoverted bps this set alone, he really should have won this match, not so sure anymore.
always loved the reverb in this halle stadium court
Very good service game from Ugo!
Humbert just setting this up so he can clutch it in the third set tb again
Oh man Humbert has some really sorry looking facial hair
People talk about how De Minaur doesn't look his height, but Humbert seriously doesn't look 6'2" to me.
Really? He looks very long and lanky to me. FAA is 6’4 and Humbert doesn’t look that much shorter.
Ons is through to the final!
Damn I was sure Ugo would close it out. Felix still alive!
He holds lolll
Huge props to Norrie for his season. Talk about giving it everything
Try Shapo and Fed for max shanks
He played fed 3 days ago
Yes grass in general is like that but especially at Halle (and perhaps some other tournaments). They grow the grass outside the court and put it together in squares, which can mean dodgy bounces if the ball hits a seam (Federer explained this in press). It adds an element of risk that isn't as present on other surfaces, plus it's much faster.
Grass is very quick so it’s easy to mistime balls because your being rushed.
Humbert is a real fighter and he’s crafty too. I especially admire his Paris match against Tsistipas where he was physically dead but still managed to win. There are shades of that in this match too
That match made me a fan of Ugo
The Samsonova hype train just pulled into the station - and we never saw it coming.
Why does Ugo have a mustache on his chin
It’s called a goatee.
It's got a part in the middle
If Shapo was an animal he would be a Labrador puppy. Super excitable, not much attention span, fun and loud at times but likely to shit or piss himself.
Ugo is aggressive. I like that.
