What happened with all the walkovers in Almaty?
Andreescu playing doubles with Putintseva this week
I suddenly had a thought. If ATP starts providing points to any player that is atleast >= 100 ranks in difference with the opposition, for winning a set, in the first 2 rounds of a Slam, would it really motivate the journeymen?
For example, Oscar Otte took two sets off Zverev and those were the only sets Zverev had lost until the Semifinals. Oscar is a good clay court player and is often drawn against way better players. (like Fed in 2019, 2 tight sets). If the difference in ranking is this much, and to the benefit of lower ranked players for him grand slams are a major financial source, exceptions like 1/3rd ranking points for taking a set, 2/3rd points for taking 2, would not only provide them better opportunities in their future draws and gain them direct entry to some, it will also fuel them to produce better matches. This is a wild train of thought, I am aware.
They used to give “quality” bonus points for beating high ranked opponents. I’m not a fan of giving points based on sets won though.
That would also be a good motivator. A better alternative, infact. And it sounds more fair too. Tennis should have some subjective semblance of a ranking too. Unforced errors and ELO , for example, are not concrete objective parameters either.
I mean that would provide them with:
For the first round either 3 or 6 points.
For the second round 15 or 30 points.
That isn't a whole lot and kind of feels like a meaningless change, because its not like these guys aren't trying. All of these players have tons of opportunities to do well on tour, and giving at most 30 points for not winning doesn't feel like it'll significantly change the problems plaguing most lower ranked players.
At the lower levels, 30 points are atleast enough to credit a performance in which someone took 2 sets from a player ranked more than 100 spots above.
I agree though, it's a complicated line of thinking, and if something like this is to be implemented, it should offer more points, by a complicated algorithm that takes into factor the exact ranking difference, the recent form of the opposition etc. Basis of this is naturally the despair that comes with being able to not be rewarded for taking a set or two from a player at the absolute top of the game.
Imagine how that player ranked 256 would have felt after taking a set from the World No 1 in Belgrade 2. It's a cruel sport, I agree, but a thread, no matter who thin, would be there for a rags to riches story in tennis.
Aslan Karatsev changed his life, and there are other players that have the skills to do it but luck don't favour everyone. Bad draws after bad draws wear the mentality of a player down.
This system I proposed has its cons too, it might make players complacent and sometimes they would even be satisfied with taking a set in matches where they would go in with a do or die attitude.
I'm enjoying the transition from clay to grass, and how it changes the favourites.
Is it me or has Ons gotten fitter? She seemed to have leaned out vs last year.
Why did Mallorca stop for today?
I joined late but I did hear Lahyani say "play is suspended because the court is too slippery"
Court became too slippy
No idea. Wondering the same also.
Literally says rain delay on bet365, but weather seems really good. Maybe it's the sunset?
I have a -2.5 game handicap on Sandgren, was looking like it's gonna hit but now we gonna have to wait for tmrw :(
Sandgren imploding on court about hawkeye. Kinda funny. Enjoying the two commentators during this match too, keeping it entertaining and enjoying their banter with one another. Reminds me of when Kyrgios left the court with the racquets and they said "but how many is he coming back with?" hahaha.
Nick challenged him to a boxing match
god shut up sandgren. I hope they do show him the replay so that he'll see how wrong he is. Wont change his mind though
Why is Britney Spears playing in the background of the Struff-Mannarino match? lol
Because they're crazy and the feel alright and they want to keep you up all night.
More importantly, why isn’t Britney played at more matches??
Wuhu petko :) cool Little Dance at the end
Nice win for Petko, she keeps getting tough draws it fuckin' hurts
P2h and Mahut are coming for that Wimbledon title
Oh Pierre 🤦
Is Bartoli coaching Sorana now?
Is that Sorana’s eye? :(
Yeah it is! A long serve hit the frame of her racket and nailed her own eye. She’s playing now tho so that’s a good sign.
Ufff petko again has a rough draw with cirstea
Interestingly, Humbert's live ranking and race ranking are the exact same right now - #25
Happy we got two first time WTA tournament winners the same day...both of them have been fantastic all week!
Did Samsonova said she is there without her team? That has to be nerve-wrecking. Big props to her if thats true. From qualifiers to the final.
Nerve-racking? Seems the opposite, it let her play her best. Wonder if she'll leave her team behind for a few more tourneys now. lol
Nerve-racking because she definitely had to overthink and overdo things that her team would normally do for her just by being there. Its great that it worked for her here yeah, but its most likely the exception rather than the rule.
The size of the Queens trophy will never not amuse me - bigger than any of the slams' trophies too.
2021’s 10 Maiden WTA Champions
Sorribes Tormo (Guadalajara)
Sharma (Charleston 250)
Osorio Serrano (Bogotá)
Amazing that Krejcikova won her first singles title just two weeks before winning her first singles grandslam!!
Just woke up and wtf Bweh lost to Umbert? Looks one sided too (at least the first set).
It wasn’t that one sided. Ugo was serving really well. Andrey was okay on serve but he had one loose service game at 4 all and got broken. He had 2 break points when Ugo was trying to serve it out but he didn’t convert. Then the second set was very tight. Both served really well and it went to a tiebreak. Andrey made an error at 4 all in the tiebreak (I think) and then Ugo had two points on his serve to serve out the match. Ugo was the better player overall but Andrey made errors at the worst time in both sets
wow thanks for the nice summary!!
No problem. At least I didn’t suffer through that match in vain lol
Is Kyle Edmund playing in wimbledon
No, I believe surgery recovery
Big win for Samsonova. A bit uneven at times but she kept it together at the end. Congrats.
Bencic been on a downward slope recently with a bunch of early round lost, so its good that she could still make it to a final. A good confidence boost.
There's a dog rolling around on the court in Berlin, lol!
I hope she doesn’t have to go through quailies for Wimbledon
Samsonova is the female Berrettini. Huge serve and huge pace. Her play is insane. I hope to see her at Wimbledon.
What a run from Samsonova, coming through the qualifiers to win a 500. She has a really strong game for grass.
Samsonova brings some cheer to Russians after Bweh and Dasha's losses earlier today, wins her first WTA title (and it's a WTA 500 title)! Do you think she's capable of a Badosa/Krejcikova RG sort of run at Wimbledon this season?
She definitely can if she doesn’t have to go through qualies and stays mentally/physically fit after this
Bencic fought hard. But what can you do with that cannon?))
Crazy that Carlos Moya retired at 34. Crazier that it was 2010 when he feels like a 90s player. He’s only 5 years older than Federer.
Looking up his wiki, he made two finals in the 90s, winning one and was world no. 1 in 1999.
Yep he got to be the best player from Mallorca for about 5 years.
His French open record is baffling. He just had one great run and pretty much nothing aside from his win.
If this is not a prerequisite for Wimby WC, I don't know what is.
Hell yeah samsonova.
This girl has a CANON on her. Amazing
What a win
What an absolutely epic victory for Samsonova
Getting Tennis TV this month has been so amazing I’ve been able to watch a bunch of Medvedev’s matches that I’ve never seen before including the full infamous Miami match with Tsitispas. This is amazing.
Samsonova is tragic at the net. Poor girl.
I hope she plays some doubles and builds on her impressive game
Bencic talking to herself about Samsonova: "Yeah, hit hard. Hit even harder."
Hingis who wasn't exactly a ray of sunshine towards her competition was coached by her Mom. After Hingis she has worked with Bencic and looks like time hasn't changed what she teaches her players
Bencic has never seemed particularly nice, her hot takes about Osaka situation and Zverev situation also don’t help things.
When I saw her live she kept swearing under her breath in German
Both the Grass warmup Champions, Berettini and Ugo, got to 4th round in the last edition of Wimbledon and got discombobulated by Federer and Djokovic respectively, winning 5 and 7 games each.
5 and 8*
Wimbledon WC for Samsonova, please.
Strong performance from Berrettini. Thoroughly deserved win! Serve looks unbreakable at the moment. Another solid result for Norrie. Making deep runs at most tournaments this year it seems.
Andy Murray said SW19 plays slower than Queens, so he’s not sure Berrettini is a contender at Wimbledon. Matteo’s played well on the slow stuff too this year though. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t make a deep run there. Only concern for me remains his return game.
Ooh my feed has changed to Mallorca. Home of the future grass 1000 tournament.
You think they’d give Mallorca a 1000? It just became a tournament this year.
I’m joking. Just thinking of places to have a 1000.
How's Berlin's stadium?
Samsonova's serve is unplayable. If she keeps it up, she cud have a good run at Wimby
Bookies should offer Djokovic vs. the field at 50/50 odds.
Practically are at 1.90 odds.
People have been talking about him but his form has been inconsistent especially this year.
What a charming winners interview! Hope both of these guys have good runs at Wimbledon. Berrettini especially will be exciting to follow!
Does the Queen's trophy also have a pineapple on top 🤣
Have no idea who the second favourite for Wimbledon is, might as well be Berrettini.
Only if he's drawn in the opposite half of Djokovic
I didn't like his return this week. And the courts get slower over the course of the tournament. I'd say there is no 2nd favourite behind Novak, but he could be knocked out as well.
Yeah if he comes up against a big server might be in trouble.
I bet the odds makers are going to make it Federer by default.
Atm mine says Tsitsipas which is stupid.
Berrettini SF confirmed at SW19
Depends on the draw cuz he could meet Djokovic in the quarters... but yes, hope he can go far.
Couldn't he be put in Djokovic's quarter?
Lleyton won Wimbledon so why not Queens?
Great ambassador for the sport, both of these men are
Was wondering where Cam Norrie's accent was from and went on Wikipedia and now I'm even more confused than before.
He represents Great Britain, and previously represented New Zealand.
He was born in South Africa.
His father is Scottish, and his mother is Welsh.
But lives in London.
He spent most of his childhood in New Zealand, and that's basically where the accent is from.
I think he's more British than anything else but certainly this is the case with a lot of our players, that they spend a lot of their younger years living and training elsewhere. Probably because you'd have to be rich to make it as a top pro player in the UK, where tennis is a very expensive sport to pursue (or a late developer like Evans).
A true commonwealth man
College in the States as well 😂
Great performances from Berrettini to win the tournament. Although its hard to judge his chances in Wimbledon yet. Would be curious to see him matching up with some more higher ranked players before guessing his chances.
A tournament has to make a human sized trophy sooner or later.
Goddamn Matteo is a beautiful man
Queen's trophy is so ridiculously big!
Really hope Norrie gets a title before the end of the year
Holy shit that's a Barcelona sized trophy
Beast serve from Samsonova, it's more comfortable on the return with that serve..
Crowd cheering when Matteo asks to take his mask off, classic England
I am certainly not complaining
It’s a face that’s a shame to be covered up.
Are we sure that that trophy is big enough?
Love you Cam you weird hybrid of countries and accents.
Lol and I remember the talks of Berrettini not deserving to be in the top 10
Berrettini played very alright to win this tournament, nothing special. The line up was nothing like Halle this year, usually Queens has a much tougher draw.
Norrie now straight to the doubles match and then Eastbourne tomorrow. Crazy
First 500 victory for Matteo. Incredibly he has two titles on grass which I think is his worst surface. Avanti così!! What a year he's had after all of the injuries in 2020.
That serve and forehand alone makes him a huge threat on grass. His topspin backhand doesn't seem that great though but I haven't seen enough of him to judge.
I think when I first saw him play at Wimbledon 2019 I wished he used a one handed backhand, might as well unleash from both wings with that frame of his.
His backhand is the worst backhand in the top 30.
From the way he played, I would've thought grass was his best surface.
I think grass is his best by a bit
Hard court is definitely his best I think but from the replies maybe I'm wrong. He has never looked good at Wimbledon.
He made it the 4th round of Wimbeldon in 2019.
No way it's hard he doesn't have a tour title on hard yet haha
Prior to this 2021 season he had by far his best results on HC. Semis at USO and Shangai. But yeah I also think grass is Matteo's best surface (clay being the worst)
Personally watching him I just think he usually plays better on hard courts.
Will be interesting to see his win percentage on each surface!
Wow I don't know why I had this the opposite way but couldn't have been more wrong
He made the fourth round in 2019, losing to Federer, and before that was just not a top player yet. Grass fits his style and weaknesses really well, and he's had a lot of success on the surface. I'd rate him much higher on grass than hard or clay.
Seems everyone agrees with you so maybe I'm just wrong about this to be honest
Let's goooooo! 4 250 titles, a slam SF, a masters final, and now a 500 title. Epic!
Berrettini should go far at Wimbledon
The chasm in quality between no. 9 to no. 41 is plain for all to see.
Norrie let his emotions get the better of him in the end.
Matteone nazionale ❤️
**VAI MATTEOOO! SI GODEEE**
Norrie with the tiny bit of grey at the front looking like Mr Sheffield.
Let's fucking go!!! Sei enorme Matteo!!!
Is there a name for the style with which Norrie holds his backhand?
As soon as Corrie let's the pressure get to him he double faults and screws it.
Now that was a shocking game.
You banger! Nice one Berrettini!
That game was a horrific choke from Norrie lol
40-0 and gets broken. My anxieties are riddled, Cam.
Oh nooooo not like this Cam....
Finally gets the break, and after being down 40-0. Avanti così Matte, daje!!
Atta boy tiny hat!
Ooff that's it... That's double fault fucked it
Well that was unfortunate
Berrettini’s backhand makes me so mad. Like it doesn’t have to be world class but it’s gotta be serviceable.
I have no clue how he manages to work with it and be in top 10 too, amazing lmao
His forehand is sublime.
What a time for a double fault 😬
Oof not the best time for a double fault
Berrettini running out of time where he'd be wishing he was more aggressive on the return games. He can't let this be decided on a coin flip tie break.
Norrie needs to pray that Berrettini messes up on serve, which is not a good position to be in
I love that Norrie closes his eyes during the breaks. Looks very zen.
If this goes to tie break Norrie has a real chance here
Well I honestly have absolute no fucking clue how the third set will play out in the Bencic-Samsonova match now. What a scoreline ffs.
Important hold for Norrie that
Cam looks way better ever since he gave up that bandana look. Clutch serving down 15-40, even with Berrettini's meh returns he couldn't do too much there.
I never really paid a lot of attention to him before, had to do a quick Google search... OMG you are right lol. He looks much better without a bandana. Funny how some people just suit certain looks... like, can you imagine Med with a bandana? Tsitsipas with a baseball cap?
Med used to wear hats, especially in the heat. I don’t really know why he stopped.
Well... if you're prone to hair loss, it's probably best to stop wearing a hat when you know you will be sweating profusely for a few hours at a time... just saying.
I'm surprised this is Jabeur first title win. Would think with her tennis style, she would have won more by now. Maybe this win will help kick-off a few more. Congrats Jabeur.
Nothing to be ashamed of for Kasatkina. Third final already this year. No luck this time though.
Norrie been so clutch facing break points. Might come to haunt Matteo.
Berrettini cannot convert. Federesque.
It's more Norrie went GOAT on them
Samsonova’s pain killers must have kicked in.
That bazooka arm is back
Berrettini has a real chance here. Needs to take this.
Haha the crowd shaming for not finding a seat is gold
Dropped the hammer on that forehand ⚒️
Dr. Jekyll on serve and Mr. Hyde on return
Russians not having a great Sunday 😑
I’m so happy for Ons it was so deserving! 🙌🏾
Berrettini looking pretty garbage on the return game. Had 3 points he could have made his and cooked them all.
Still can't see Norrie winning this. Momentum doesn't matter as much when your opponent can serve his way out of everything.
A little sad that our bi queen lost on pride month but so so happy for Ons
Still proud of Dasha to get herself back on the board again in the second set 🏳️🌈
And the fact that she immediately went over and hugged and congratulated ons.
I love me some Dasha
Is her sexuality or pride month relevant? I think Kasatkina can explore whatever she wants without having to be the banner girl in tennis for bi people.
Kasatkina has come out when her home country has numerous anti gay laws I think it’s super relevant.
I understand she spoke about it in the interview, but has she been very vocal on it? I don't think she cares to be the front runner for pro-gay people in sports. Just says she swings both ways. That's it. I'm sure she'd rather be known for her tennis than to be the poster girl for gay sports stars.
I'm kinda on the boat where we should let Kasatkina come out and say she is bi before labeling her as such. Especially given she is from a country where such labels can be problematic to her personal or financial wellbeing.
She only said that she was open-minded to relationships with both sexes, I believe.
My thoughts also.
Okay but I’m bi and her talking about that has been huge for me so it matters to me.
Glad it has helped!
I wouldn’t say helped I’ve been comfortable with my sexuality for almost a decade. It’s just nice that people are starting to get over the need for a straight/gay binary.
Well I appreciate that you recognise the importance of her coming out.
In russia it's socially accepted to be lesbian, contrary to gay.
the stupidity is remarkable.
I wanna rant about the lesbian ‘acceptance’ being a different kind of discrimination but I’m tired and too queer to argue anymore.
Thank you, my pleasure.
Sorry, wasn't aimed personally towards you, just the contradiction of your statement.
Yes because I love when athletes have the courage to be their full authentic selves. Representation is important
So it’s relevant to me. It can be irrelevant to you.
That’s your business
