saurabh13642

Guys is there no racquet bracket for wimbledon going on?

WinterSunshine22

MedMan or CarrQuerr in the Mallorca final?

jeffwingersballs

Definitely going with the Querr on this one.

Both-Opening-970

With all the rage going on with that weightlifter lady going to Olympics, what do you think, how would that go in tennis? Imagine, Big 3 retiring and than transitioning to ladies just to win another 60 GS between them...

vngbusa

Google Richard Raskind aka Renee Richards

AuthenticWolf

Wow, that would be outrageous!

aweap

Ryba in this match had more than double the number of winners to Sevastova but also more than double the number of ue's at a whopping 72...tough cold conditions for both the players.

-Ketjow-

Wow that would be The most UEs by player who won in 3 set match I have ever seen. It was 69 until now.

Generic_Reddit_Bot

69? Nice. I am a bot lol.

gkmaster21

Rybakina, Giorgi, Kontaveit and Ostapenko are in the semifinals in Eastbourne. What do they have in common? A lot of power and little/no topspin. In other news, the grass is still green. I know that Wimbledon is a bit slower, especially the Centre Court but this surface will always favor players like these.

aweap

Lol! Rybakina in her post-match interview, literally calls out the chair umpire for all the 'wrong calls' which made it harder for either of them to play smoothly during the match. 😬

thelastattemptsname

Sevastova checking the ball after losing the match tells just brutal the loss was for her. Had match points almost an hour ago and now she ended up on the losing side

Big_booty_ho

Was the umpire calling rybakina aryba? Is that her nick name?

hopez11

Let me tell you, this rybakina train is a wild ride...

starboys23

Sevastova after slipping: “call an ambulance… but not for me!”

[deleted]

Rybakina broke back when Sevastova was serving for the match in set 2, and ended up winning the tiebreak. Sevastova breaks back when Rynakina was serving for the match, and we end up in a deciding tiebreak.

[deleted]

No surprise.

starboys23

SevastOVER….

WinterSunshine22

Sevastova is pissed.. said Shut up! to somebody in the audience because they were talking too much during her changeover break.

Rather_Dashing

Two lucky losers into the semis of Eastbourne, wow. Hoping for an all lucky loser final 🤞

Chosen1gup

Gauffstapenko were down 1-5 and are now up 6-5

aweap

Rybakina barely escapes to take the match to a third set.

Pristine-Citron-7393

Shocking game there from Lopez.

Particular-Bit-7852

my boy brandon nakashima playing at wimby!!

Schlok453

inb4 Lopez wins Wimbledon

WinterSunshine22

He just lost to Mannarino lol

Schlok453

He'll get his revenge in the Wimbledon final

calen95

Sevastova is so zoned in atm

SomersetMackem

Is Zarina Dyas the only Kazkhstani tennis player actually from Kazakhstan?

WinterSunshine22

On the mens´ side there is one player: Dostanbek Tashbulatov \[902\] On the women´ side there are 3 players: Zarina Diyas \[101\], Gozal Ainitdinova \[505\], Zhibek Kulambayeva \[548\] Most of the other "Kazakhstani" players are bought from Russia or Ukraine and some few of them are ethnic Russians/Ukrainians who were born in Kazakhstan (since it´s a former Soviet state and many nationalities were living all over the Soviet Union back then). I´m for example an ethnic German girl who was born in Kazakhstan. :)

thelastattemptsname

Think so. Rest were bought from Russia

ChocolateSnowflake

Djokovic and Gomez-Herrera have withdrawn from the Mallorca final. Supposedly Gomez-Herrera is suffering an ankle injury. Just heard on Tennistv. Awaiting a written source. Edit: https://twitter.com/tennistv/status/1408131185167982601?s=21

Cthulhu_awaken

Probably because they didn't think they will reach the final. Novak needs to go to London ASAP. I was downvoted earlier for saying that he doesn't need this.

ChocolateSnowflake

Yeah no way he’s hanging around Mallorca until Saturday when he’ll be playing Wimbledon on Monday.

Schlok453

Hmm, I reckon that's a cover-up. Djokovic clearly couldn't handle the pressure of such a big final

riquelm

Djokovic can just come out alone and win it

Rez125

Thiem out of Wimby

smalliebigs69

some very disparate takes about Mannarino here lmao

HTMListerine

If Mannarino were to disappear off the tour tomorrow, no one would bat an eyelid

HTMListerine

Mannarino is such a boring player. My god

cooldude1991

Mannarino is the Hsieh Su-Wei of ATP.

riquelm

Is Djokovic going to play doubles at Olympics?

cooldude1991

I think he will. That Olympic medal is a great legacy to have.

studiousmaximus

gosh, mannarino lately looks like he’s in the thick of an intense round of chemo

cooldude1991

He looks thin. Sometimes I am surprised how is he even generating pace on the ball. It's just a swipe of the racquet and maneuvering.

sprgsmnt

Rybakina's serve is insane today. She might lose to Sevastova though...

neyiat

PTPA exposes the greed of certain top players.

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

Whatever happened to Kim Clijsters and her comeback?

aweap

Coronavirus and injury...maybe she'll try for US Open like last year...seems more comfortable there.

[deleted]

Fun fact: Venus Williams (age 41, rank 112) is the oldest ranked WTA player and Serena Williams (age 39, rank 8) is the second oldest.

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

Interestingly there are 4 men in their 40s with a ranking.

[deleted]

Off the top of my head I know Karlovic is one, I’m guessing the others are also tall men with big serves Edit: actually no, the others are under 6 feet, and one is even 5’7” wow

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

You might have to click on age to sort it and yes he is second oldest. https://live-tennis.eu/en/official-atp-ranking

Viks101

Interesting that the youngest ranked ATP player is 17 and only 4 players under 18 whereas youngest WTA player is 15 and there are 26 players under 18

[deleted]

Yeah on the whole it seems that WTA players peak earlier than ATP players. Which makes it even cooler that the Williams sisters at their current ages are still playing at a high level

aweap

Ryba sending everything long at the moment 😖

[deleted]

Wimbledon starts on 28th, only 4 days left. Players should be taking a rest and not getting injured at the moment.

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

Plenty of rain delays going to be happing in the first couple of days at Wimbledon, they’ll get plenty of rest lol

jeffwingersballs

YES Network is showing* a documentary of the 2008 Wimbledon final.

Styxen

De Minaur is so fast it's insane

[deleted]

Bad set 2 choke by Pospisil. Up 3-0 then broken to love twice.

aweap

Can't have all good things on the same day...so I guess I'll take Giorgi over Dasha and Ryba today. 😔

neyiat

Sevastova sweetie you're doing amazing

neyiat

Claire liu got in!

Newfoundland1

OMG y'all please check sabalenka's all lost matches since last year!!! 90% same pattern!!! Losing the first set, comfortably winning the second and again losing the 3rd!!!

Big_booty_ho

Everyone who has beaten Gauff in her last 3 tournaments has gone ahead to win the entire thing. Congratulations on your title Sevastova

Newfoundland1

Can anyone explain this about sabalenka? Losing the first set and Dominating the second set and again losing the third set? Almost all her loses are like this.

Newfoundland1

Rybakina match link?

aweap

https://live-tennis.stream/watch/anastasija-sevastova-free.html

Newfoundland1

Can't watch?

aweap

Use VPN

Iiiifoundsweetroad

We don't talk enough about how Feliciano Lopez is the same age as Federer and still kicking!

-Ketjow-

76 consecutive Grand Slam appearances and still counting. A freak of nature...

aweap

Ramanathan lost in a tight 5 setter against Polmans. Sigh! Another grandslam...another singles main draw devoid of any Indians...Astra Sharma also lost today, so no representation from overseas as well 😔

[deleted]

Yeah I was excited because the last time they met up Ramanathan won and he has a better grass record overall. But a couple of points here and there make all the difference

Viks101

Is Sania gonna play the doubles at Wimbledon?

aweap

Probably. Heard she has a protected ranking or something in that vein.

bringthenoise84

Querrey absolutely beaming in that post match interview. Bet that win felt good.

sertyawert

Aw Querrey looks so happy

smalliebigs69

some uncharacteristic errors from RBA toward the end of that set. with Cilic now seeded, Querrey is possibly the unseeded player no one wants to face.

vngbusa

A Querrey v Djokovic first round on slick grass would be a tight match.

Cthulhu_awaken

If Djokovic gets Querry in first round he will lose.

Schlok453

X Doubt

shyaminator96

He has a shot. Novak is usually much less mentally tough in early rounds compared to late rounds. And Sam has beaten him at Wimbledon before after Novak won RG.

Radocfa

Querrey is a top 10 current grass court player and nobody can convince me otherwise.

Gillioni

Volynets looking very good

Cthulhu_awaken

Djokovic should be very afraid if he gets Querry in his draw at Wimbledon again.

IcyOrdinary1

Pospisil can be frustrating to watch. Very talented guy but plays the big points so poorly.

WislaHD

Watching him play live, he doesn't really seem all that different quality wise from the top 30 players, at least from the eye test. And yet I watched him on serve at 5-5 and a moment later he's lost the set 5-7. Really makes you wonder what margins differentiate a player like Pospisil from the other top 30 and how frustrating that must be. Marton Fucsovics is another who makes me feel similarly.

IcyOrdinary1

Its the mental side which is the big differentiator. And physical too to a certain extent.

Chosen1gup

Kwon makes his first tour SF after losing first round in qualies to a British WC ranked 1183

gadfly101

And making the SF by beating Ivashka, who beat said British WC ranked 1183, who was also a lucky loser.

smalliebigs69

automated line calling called a Querrey first serve out that caused a big puff of white chalk

jeffwingersballs

Yes, but we must treat Hawkeye as if it's infallible.

Schlok453

Wrong line

smalliebigs69

possible. Querrey kinda looked up quizzically.

Schlok453

I think it hit the inside tramline but outside the service box

Schlok453

It's funny how no one is talking about Bautista Agut as a contender on grass. He literally made the semis in the last edition of Wimbledon (tbh I don't see him as a contender but I can't work out why).

Gillioni

Because he’s not a serious contender lol

Ashru987

I mean he’ll always be a contender to make it deep but I don’t think a single person actually thinks he has a chance to win, that‘s why no one is talking about him.

Salmabutnotsalma

Cerundolo, Molcan and Gulbis are out of qualifying this is sad. Also did Nakashima just send Troicki and Gulbis into retirement? Have some mercy man

aweap

Is Gulbis retiring?

Salmabutnotsalma

No I'm just kidding but I think it was his last chance to play in Wimbledon

jeffwingersballs

Querry vs. RBA is quality grass court tennis. Too bad it didn't come in a semifinal or final.

[deleted]

What time is the Wimbledon main draw annnouncement?

Schlok453

Friday morning (10 am local time)

Sophony

Wow when's the last time an ATP player from China was in a slam? Zhizhen Zhang just made it past Qualies!

vngbusa

Guy actually has a tour level game it’s just his mind that is the problem. Way too emotional on court and it affects his play.

Chosen1gup

Li Zhe at 2019 AO got a WC. You’d have to go further back for the last time someone got through qualies

guinguiny

Poor Domi gonna be out for several weeks 😢 hoping to see him come back stronger and defend his US open title 😁

jeffwingersballs

The tour is lesser without peak Thiem.

guinguiny

I agree with this so much!

slayer_of_potatoes

Nooo, Molcan! Wanted him to qualify after seeing him in Belgrade. Lost from 2 sets up. Was up a break in set 5, had break points to take the lead in sets 3 and 4.

gana04

The memes are creeping into my subconscious. Last night I dreamt that Gulbis had a documentary crew following him. In the dream he was a literal prince from some small made up nation (Like Estonia or something) working on his comeback and he was reportedly making huge leaps, he was beating everyone and was now styling his game to beat Novak. As a Nole fan I was worried Gulbis could become the obstacle in Novak's search for his 20th slam. Cut to their match Gulbis is looking confident, the commentators are praising him. Nervously I check the score.... 5-1 Djokovic on the first set. Anyways, any psychologists here now what does this mean?

lostinmoss

> small made up nation (Like Estonia or something) Ouch for all the Estonians out there

gana04

Tbf if I was a country I'd be Estonia, just hiding there in the corner trying to blend in with the background and not to atract the attention of the oil seeking bullies.

Schlok453

It means that you watch too much tennis (just like me)

tonyfitzgerald

VOLYNETS: Superb name for a tennis player. and she's a set up. Volynets beats Maia in straight sets to go 1st round proper on Monday. Great match.

Slambodog

She should play mixed doubles with Tennys Sandgren

jannar24

Makes me thinking of Bogdan from Breaking Bad

Sperrow8

Good match overall, but that mistake sour the match a bit, and it happened at a crucial point of the match as well. I thought Ostapenko smiled really extra after she won that second set, so she probably noticed it too.

jeffwingersballs

Hell hath no fury like a Penko scorned.

[deleted]

Holy shit this Ramanathan Polmans qualifying match is taking forever lol

Conceite

Damn. As a Domi fan I’m super sad :(

ThreeLibras84

I really really like Ostapenko

jasonkochel

Welcome to "Embrace the Absurdity" fandom!

Viks101

Happy with Dasha's grass season so far. Losing here isn't the worst for her as she can get some time to rest before Wimbledon. Ostapenko didn't deserve to win though, she should have gotten more violations and not to mention the score discrepancy which could have swung the match.

[deleted]

The commentators made a statement that Ostapenko was awarded a point that she actually lost in the previous set. Ostapenko was serving for the set at 6-5 and it was 0-15. Ostapenko nets the point, and the chair announces 15-15. It should have been 0-30. No one blinks an eye. I just replayed the footage and the commentators are exactly right. It should have been 0-30 not 15-15. Ostapenko goes on to hold and win the set. Picture of Ostapenko netting the ball on her side. Picture of 15-15 score. https://imgur.com/a/CTPZrg0 Video: https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/o740zm/ostapenko_loses_the_point_but_is_awarded_the_point/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

WinterSunshine22

What is done in these circumstances? Really sucks for Dasha... could have been a tie-break.

rubbish_bin030121

she should thank the chair, penko will be difficult to hold if it was 0-30

[deleted]

Agreed. I just uploaded a video! https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/o740zm/ostapenko_loses_the_point_but_is_awarded_the_point/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

sprgsmnt

yes, that was ugly, but also Dasha wasnt herself today. ostapenko pressed her and she "got scared".

Viks101

She has played a lot last 2 weeks... She looked tired towards the end of the match. She usually doesn't like getting involved in bullshit and she has had incidents with Penko in the past. Just hope she doesn't take anything negative from this match into Wimbledon.

sprgsmnt

true, the matches weren't easy. i'm hoping for a great Wimbledon too.

Schlok453

Now just wait for the people saying "If the opponent doesn't say anything then it doesn't matter"

smalliebigs69

There's something to be said about it basically being gaslighting. Kasatkina was probably aware on some level and it might have lingered in her mind, causing her level to drop for the rest of the match. Same thing happened to Sharma earlier this year.

Viks101

Yesterday Svitolina should have won the first point of her tiebreaker against Rybakina but umpire said replay and she didn't complain much like Dasha. She had a very bad tiebreaker afterwards. Maybe, these things do affect players a lot.

smalliebigs69

kinda sours the outcome for me

sprgsmnt

Kasatkina is struggling hard against Ostapenko. oh well... LE. it is done. Ostapenko in semis.

thcm123

What happened to Vika?? And :( on Thiem

Viks101

She played a 3hr match against Cornet- maybe needs recovery time ahead of Wimbledon so gave a bye to her opponent.

Omegatron64

Thiem officially out of Wimbledon, which means Cilic is now seeded, Zverev is bumped up to a top 4 seed (this could be big), Agut to a top 8 seed (helpful for his semifinal defense), and Felix to a top 16 seed.

FlyReasonable6560

I know we all clown zverev and rightly so, but he could be very dangerous on the grass if his serve is working. I could honestly see him making the SF or F here. Ultimately losing to Novak, of course

jeffwingersballs

> Cilic is now seeded I think that's best for making the brakcet more interesting.

neyiat

Mackie pulled through! Into the main draw

Ddmoo

Neither of the British lads made it through but fair play to them, they got further than anyone thought they would and both lost in 5 set thrillers. Now to look forward to seeing Draper in the main competition next week.

Sophony

Wanted Matusevich to get in, I remember watching him during the US Open Juniors. I like Fery aswell

TheToyHero

Kinda disappointed that Fery didn't qualify. I felt like it was on his racket the whole way through until the final set. It should have been over in 3. Can only hope Katie Swan can snatch a win against Radionova

Ddmoo

He just seemed to lose his nerve in the tie breakers and then was gassed by the final set. Hopefully the sort of resolve he needs to develop comes with more experience.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-Ketjow-

Kasatkina should have been 30-0 up, what a robbery.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-Ketjow-

Yeah, and with so many people watching too.

Sperrow8

Everybody was distracted thinking about that argument Ostapenko had, including the umpire too apparently.

tom6195

Not that thiem would’ve posed any _real_ threat this year but Wimbledon already feels like a foregone conclusion I don’t think I’ll be paying much attention to it this year

sprgsmnt

why, there will be plenty of great matches?

Darius0995

Oh yeah, just like RG was a foregone conclusion. Ridiculous sentiment.

Schlok453

You're right of course, but it would have been a big opportunity to gain some much needed ranking points. He had the horrendous luck of drawing Querrey in R1 in 2019 (and lost).

Ashru987

Yeah maybe we already know who the winner is going to be but literally every match is a toss up and anything can happen. I have no idea who is making it to the second week outside of Djokovic, let alone quarters or semis. I feel like that is fun.

jeffwingersballs

The one time I care about a WTA match over an ATP match and Tennis Channel shows the first two sets of the WTA match and puts the decisive set behind their paywall and switches to the early part of set 1 of the ATP match. Fuck you Tennis Channel.

cooldude1991

Their strategy to make you buy TC+

jeffwingersballs

I get it, but it just makes me hate them and I'll just get a stream. It's not the 1990s. They can't pull these scum bag moves.

cooldude1991

I agree and I do use streams. Double fuck you to TC, ESPN, NBC, Comcast and the rest of the media mafia.

jeffwingersballs

I could be wrong, but I think they would make more money collaborating in doing what's best for the growth of the sport instead of gate keeping the copyrights.

rubbish_bin030121

penko break is not a news, she hold is a news

cooldude1991

I've said it before and I'll say it again (with the caveat of this is my personal opinion, I don't know shit), Thiem needs to change his forehand style -- the way he puts topspin with that pure strike will make an impact on his wrist over time and wee may be seeing it now. He puts way to much effort into every ball to get the rotations which looks suboptimal. Either switch to Pure Aero which adds another gear to your topspin shots or play a little flatter. I believe that his injury may be a case of an overworked wrist but what do I know.

FlyReasonable6560

nah I think you're right, he works very hard for the force he generates on the ball, it doesn't seem as effortless as some of the other guys, he was bound to get injured at some point, it just sucks it had to happen now

Gillioni

Penko, still complaining to the chair umpire: "her job is to see the ball, not to say what I'm talking. It's not nice, you know?"

bjworthy93

Thiem's right wrist injury has forced him to skip the next 3 tournaments and maybe more. I hope he can come back in time for the US Open. This has been a horrible year for him. 😥

ChocolateSnowflake

[Thiem out of Wimbledon, Hamburg and Gstaad](https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/o73ebz/thiem_out_of_wimbledon_hamburg_and_gstaad/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

cooldude1991

ugh might as well hand the trophy to Djokovic at this point.

jeffwingersballs

Why? Thiem didn't have a prayer anyways.

cooldude1991

I had high hopes :-)

Vqwertbnm

Like I said, he's injured Where's that annoying guy who was saying he was having "mental difficulties"

ChocolateSnowflake

He’s injured now. He’s said himself multiple times since the US Open that he’s been struggling mentally.

Lefuf

This sucks so much

Viks101

Are there any proper rules for what defines a code violation for improper conduct.. Siniakova got one at RG for just telling the umpire you don't see anything, now Ostapenko didn't get one for calling the line umpire a snitch and that she doesn't want to see her face. There were also discrepancies in Birmingham where Ostapenko didn't get a warning for a racquet smash but Ons and Marta got warning for kind of touching the grass with the racquet. Seems like everyone expects Penko to be crazy so she gets more leeway?

Schlok453

Unfortunately people don't judge you based on what you do, but rather what they expect you to do. I think you're right about the discrepancies but it's a tricky one to solve. There may also be a policy component to this: the usually calm player has an outburst, get them back in line; the crazy player goes crazy, well big characters are good for the sport so let them be.

Viks101

A lot of it is up to the umpire's discretion I think but 2nd consecutive match I have seen Ostapenko argue with the umpire like a spoilt brat. The umpire tells her not to do something, she is insistent she will continue unless she gets her outrageous demand and umpire just lets her be. Definitely a pattern there with her.

cooldude1991

Umpires are trained to handle Kyrgios and Penko level crazy differently.

vngbusa

Holy shit Mackie is gonna actually come back from 2 sets to love down… a nice change from him being on the receiving end

GhostofTeholnbugg

Fucking drag-out fight. Hope it doesn't leave him too exhausted for his first round matchup.

cooldude1991

RBA already in wimby attire. Dress for the job you want.

Gillioni

Penko did in fact go crazy, she held serve comfortably

Batu_Karaev

didn't she lose first two points though? Backhand down the line error and then drop shot error after Kasatkina's slip. And then somehow she held to 15 according to the chair.

WinterSunshine22

Yes, I saw that too. Must watch a replay. Maybe Dasha was robbed.

Ddmoo

Hate to say it but Fery looks done now. 2 sets up and then he loses 2 tie breakers in a row, so harsh for the young lad. Matusevich and Fery did well to get to the 3rd qualifying round though.

Big_booty_ho

Lol ostapenko went all mafia after that lines judge snitched on her: “change her, I don’t wanna see her face or I’m gonna go crazy.” You’re already crazy my girl

cooldude1991

I think she meant to say crazier

thelastattemptsname

Rather poor game from Dasha after that wonderful point to get the break back

rubbish_bin030121

penko means drama XD

Gillioni

I heard Penko say "it's the worst thing someone can do... I don't want to see her face" referring to a line judge who seems to have snitched on her for something

Viks101

And she gives the break back. Ostapenko fighting with the umpires and then playing crazy well just like she did against Jabeur :|

Apprehensive-Low4044

Ostapenko wanting to live her snitches get stitches fantasy with this line judge

shyaminator96

What a drop shot
